Word of the Day
Real GDP
It is the total value of all goods and services a country produces, adjusted for inflation
It removes the effect of rising prices (inflation) to show true economic growth of a country.
Sometimes, GDP goes up just because prices are higher, not because more goods and services are produced.
Real GDP helps us see if the economy is actually growing or if things just cost more.
It is also called constant price GDP or inflation-adjusted GDP.
6 Day Course
Theme: derivatives
Day 2: Wednesday
Let’s come to the price of these derivatives.
Derivatives are contracts — as we discussed earlier. They are also traded on the exchanges.
Futures lock the terms of the trade — the quantity of shares, and the price of shares.
So whoever holds the contract at the time of expiry of the contract has to execute the trade.
But these contracts can be traded till the expiry time.
So the price of these futures contracts goes up/down based on demand/supply for them.
That demand/supply changes based on what traders expect the share price to be at the time of expiry.
Similarly, the demand/supply causes the price of options to change.
Featured Question
Q. “What exactly is a market? when we say market goes up or down”
It is a loosely used term.
“Markets” can be used to describe many parts of the exchanges.
The stock exchanges are often called ‘share markets’ because that is where the stocks are bought and sold.
Usually when you hear a sentence like “the markets went up”, it refers to an index like Nifty 50.
It means that the Nifty 50 grew.
What does that mean?
Nifty 50 is an index made up of 50 of the biggest companies. They are so big, their impact is considered huge.
So if most companies in this list did well, Nifty 50 would have gone up.
Many people describe this as “markets were up”.
