Sector funds stick to one industry. Example: pharma sector funds invest only in pharmaceutical companies’ stocks.
Thematic funds stick to one theme or idea. Example: healthcare theme funds invest in pharmaceutical, hospital, chemical, and materials companies’ stocks.
Infrastructure funds, pharma funds, and technology funds are some of the most highly discussed funds.

Automobile sector funds and logistics funds have many overlapping investments.
Defence sector funds and railways sector funds have also gained prominence in recent times as stocks from these industries have performed well.
Consumer, bank & financial, energy, metals & mining, etc are some other common sectors/themes.
Featured Question
“We know that mutual funds invests in different stocks based on their type of fund, but can a mutual fund invest in other high-performing mutual funds?”
Most mutual funds do not invest in other funds.
But the provision does exist. They are allowed to invest in other mutual funds, and ETFs.
There is a category of mutual funds called Fund of Funds (FoF).
FoFs invest in other funds for diversification or for taking advantage of other fund managers’ expertise.
Example 1: if you invest in an emerging markets FoF, you are investing to gain from stocks of emerging or developing countries like India, Brazil, Vietnam, South Korea, etc.
One fund manager cannot be an expert in all those countries’ stocks.
So, the fund manager will invest in a mutual fund or ETF of each of the countries he/she wants to target.
Example 2: Gold Silver FoF aims to invest in both silver and gold. This FoF will invest in gold ETFs and silver ETFs.
