Word of the Day
Controlling Shareholder
It is the shareholder who can exercise significant control over the company because of the voting power they have
Controlling shareholders may or may not be the biggest block of shareholders.
Their control comes from being a significant shareholder and therefore having significant voting power.
They may even own less than 50% of a company’s shares.
Shareholders who own more than 50% of a company’s shares are called majority shareholders.
6 Day Course
Theme: dividends
Day 3: Wednesday
In case of dividend payment, there are a few important days that must be remembered.
First comes the dividend announcement. The company announces that it intends to pay dividends.
It also announces the record date.
On the ex-dividend date, the share trades without counting the dividend value on its books. Which means, the share price drops by roughly the dividend amount.
Example: the share price of a company was Rs 204 and it announced a dividend of Rs 2. On the ex-dividend date, the share price dropped to Rs 202.05.
Record date: this is the cut off date for receiving the dividend.
Investors whose names are not on the shareholders’ names list on this date are not eligible to get the dividend.
India now follows a faster T+1 settlement cycle which means the ex-dividend date and the record date fall on the same date now.
So, to get the dividend, the shares must be in an investor’s demat account on this date.
Dividend payout date: the dividend is paid to investors on this date.
