Word of the Day
Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)
It is the digital form of a country’s currency issued and backed by a central bank
It works just like physical money but exists only in digital form. Unlike cryptocurrencies, CBDCs are fully regulated and have the same value as regular currency.
People and businesses can make payments directly using digital wallets, without needing a bank account.
Example: RBI has launched pilot projects for the e-rupee (digital rupee) in both wholesale and retail forms.
6 Day Course
Theme: bonds
Day 2: Tuesday
In case of bonds, the interest rate (also called the coupon rate) is determined based several factors. One the most crucial factors is risk.
It’s a negotiation — similar to how the price of anything is decided.
Low risk borrowers are able to get loans at lower interest rates. This means that bonds issued by them give lower returns. But they are also deemed lower risk.
Bonds issued by governments are considered extremely low risk.
The more stable the government, the lower the risk. Example: bonds issued by the US are considered lower risk than bonds issued by Australia even though both are considered extremely low risk.
Likewise, bonds issued by bigger more stable companies are considered lower risk than those issued by smaller companies.
This is similar to how shares of smaller companies and entities are considered more risky than those of larger companies.
Featured Question
“When we redeem in a mutual fund then does the capital gain applies to that particular mutual fund or all my mutual fund gains in a financial year in which I have invested.”
It applies only on the part you have withdrawn.
Let’s say you had invested Rs 1 lakh.
In 3 years, it became Rs 1.5 lakh. So the total gains are Rs 0.5 lakh.
This means that Rs 0.5 lakh are the gains = 33.33% of the current value
Now, let’s say you withdraw Rs 75,000 from this total. Then, we will have to take the same ratio as the gains.
So, 33.33% of Rs 75,000 = Rs 25,000
Therefore, in the above case, if you withdraw Rs 75,000, the gains will be Rs 25,000.
The tax would have to be paid on this gain of Rs 25,000.
The tax always applies on the gains that are being withdrawn and not the gain made but not withdrawn.
