Word of the Day
Credit Default Swap (CDS)
It is an insurance against a borrower defaulting on their debt
If an investor or lender is concerned that a borrower might fail to repay the debt, they can buy a CDS from a financial institution.
The buyer of the CDS makes periodic payments (premiums) to the seller of the CDS.
If a default happens, then the investor is compensated for the loss because of the CDS. Thus, risk is reduced for the investor.
