Word of the Day
Beta
It measures the volatility of an investment compared to the market as a whole.
In simple words, it measures the ups and downs of the investment as the market changes.
A beta of 1 means the investment is as volatile as the market.
A beta above 1 means the investment is more volatile, while a beta below 1 means it’s calmer than the market.
It is an indicator a kind of risk. A higher beta can mean bigger returns, but also bigger losses.
6 Day Course
Theme: PMS
Day 1: Monday
Investors in India have become quite familiar with mutual funds.
There is another asset class that is similar, but a bit different.
Portfolio Management Services: PMS.
In this week’s course, we will explore PMS more and learn about what makes it a great option — and why it might not be for you, even if you have lots of money.
There’s a reason why it is less heard of. The minimum amount needed to invest in a PMS is Rs 50 lakh.
These funds tend to take much greater risk, have more concentrated portfolios (less diversification), aim to generate higher returns, and charge higher fees (usually).
In mutual funds, you pay tax when you withdraw money from it.
You do not pay any taxes when stocks are bought or sold by the fund manager.
In case of PMS, every stock selling is taxed (exactly like when you invest in stocks yourself).
In effect, you are opening a demat account with the PMS and giving them control.
We explored the question:
"What if I stop investing in bad markets and restart when things improve — will my returns be better?"
