Word of the Day
Free Trade Agreement (FTA)
It is a deal between two or more countries to make trade easier
Under an FTA, countries reduce or remove tariffs, quotas, or other barriers on the goods and services that are traded with each other.
The goal is to boost trade, and make products cheaper for consumers by increasing competition. FTAs can also be an indicator of good political relations between the countries.
Example: India has FTAs with countries like Japan, UAE, and the ASEAN nations. On 1 Oct 2025, India’s FTA with the European Free Trade Association came into force.
6 Day Course
Theme: High-risk high-reward investments
Day 1: Monday
High-risk high-reward can deliver astounding returns. But such investments work out less often.
This means that the chance of actually losing money (instead of getting higher returns) is high.
This is why high-risk high-return investments can never form a large part of most people’s investment portfolio.
In this week’s course, we will look at some examples of these investments and try to understand the possible returns and chance of loss.
Let’s start with small-cap and mid-cap mutual funds.
They are considered very risky. They can give poor returns for long durations of time — even for 6-12 years sometimes.
Investors should avoid investing in them for periods shorter than that. The returns can swing wildly.
But when things go right, these mutual funds have been able to give returns in the range of 17-20% per annum. Sometimes even more.
Do note, simply investing for a very long period does not guarantee high returns. If the economy is bad, these mutual funds can deliver poor returns even in the long run.
