Word of the Day
Public Float
It is the portion of a company’s shares that are freely available for trading in the share market
These shares exclude promoter holdings, government stakes, or any locked-in shares.
A higher public float usually means more liquidity, making it easier for retail investors to buy or sell the share, without significantly impacting the share price.
It is used to understand a company’s ownership structure.
6 Day Course
Theme: company designations
Day 2: Tuesday
Every listed company must have a Managing Director (MD) or Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
In addition to that, they also need to have a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Compliance Officer.
The Compliance Officer’s role is usually done by the Company Secretary.
The CFO is responsible for financial matters like raising funding (via loans or selling shares), allocating capital to different functions, and managing financial risk.
The CFO has the legal power to veto the CEO’s/board’s spending plans.
This role makes the CFO personally liable.
In case of financial irregularities and cases of fraud, the CFO can go to jail.
Featured Question
“What is the FIFO, first in first out method in the share market and how can I understand it by an example?”
It is a method using which stocks are sold.
Let’s say you bought a company’s stocks multiple times over different periods.
When you try to sell this stock, the oldest stocks (the ones you bought first) will be sold.
First In, First Out.
Since tax on longer term investments is lower, selling shares that have been held the longest can reduce tax.
Example.
You bought 100 shares of XYZ in Jan 2020 at Rs 45
You bought 400 shares of XYZ in March 2020 at Rs 56
You bought 200 shares of XYZ in April 2022 at Rs 72
In Aug 2025, you sell 200 shares of XYZ.
So, first, the 100 shares you bought in January 2020 will be sold.
Next, 100 out of 400 shares you bought in March 2020 will be sold.
