How can investors invest in bonds?
In India, many investment platforms offer bonds. These can be used to invest in corporate bonds or NCDs (Non Convertible Debentures).
In more recent times, some dedicated bond investment platforms have also been created. These investments cater to bond investments only and do not offer mutual funds or stocks.
To invest in government bonds, investors can use RBI’s bond website that allows retail investors to buy bonds.
Investing in bonds requires technical knowledge and understanding of the space — similar to how investing in stocks also requires knowledge.
And similar to investing in stocks, investors can opt for mutual funds if they are not skilled in bond selection themselves.
Debt mutual funds invest in bonds. Different kinds of debt mutual funds invest in different kinds of bonds.
Some invest only in government bonds (gilt funds). Some invest only in corporate bonds (corporate debt funds).
Many invest in a mixture of bond types like short term debt funds.
Featured Question
“How are NCDS AND BONDS different from each other .”
NCDs are a type of bond.
Some bonds come with the option of converting the bonds to shares later.
These are called Convertible Debentures.
So when these bonds are issued, the terms and conditions clearly mention that on maturity, investors will have the option to either take the maturity value or instead, get shares in the company.
Many even have the option to get a part of the maturity amount in the form of shares and the rest in the form of cash.
This allows the company to offer lower interest rates on the bonds.
These shares’ value is fixed when the bond is being issued.
The investors who feel the company may do very well in the future opt for convertible debentures as it gives them an option to get shares.
Bonds that do not have this option are called Non Convertible Debentures (NCDs).
So in short, every NCD is a type of a bond.
But all bonds are not NCDs.
