Word of the Day
Promoter Holdings
It refers to the percentage of a company’s shares held by its promoters.
Promoters are the founding members, individuals, or entities that are responsible for controlling and managing the company.
A higher promoter holding often indicates strong confidence in the business, as promoters have a larger stake in the company’s future performance.
Changes in promoter holding can directly impact the stock price, as they affect market sentiment and investor trust.
Example: If a company has 100 crore shares outstanding and its promoters own 60 crore shares, the promoter holding is 60%.
6 Day Course
Theme: economy vs stock markets
Day 1: Monday
We often hear of good/poor performance of the economy/stock markets in the news.
Many people treat both as the same thing. But the reality is that they are different things and indicate different things.
In this week’s course, we will try to understand the key differences between the economy and the stock markets.
The first thing to understand is that they are looking at overlapping things, but not the same things.
The stock markets are made up of listed companies (companies whose shares are available on the share markets).
Even in that, there are indices that measure a portion of the stock market.
Example: Nifty 50 is made up of only the 50 biggest companies in the stock markets. Sensex 30 has only the 30 biggest. So on.
When we talk of the economy of a country, it includes all economic activity in the country.
It includes the production, spending and income of all companies and businesses (even if they are not on the stock markets), government spending, and even individual spending, and external trade etc.
We explored the question “What if you invest in a Regular mutual fund instead of a Direct mutual fund?”
